Night skyline - downtown Vancouver

Dark and still
Is all I see.
But the night is not so silent
Though it seems to be.
There is a mother aroused
Because her baby stirred.
There is a lover awake
With his desires unfulfilled.
A future scholar burns her oil
In thirst for eternal light.
A surprise heir tosses in bed
Over the sudden limelight.
Some are paid to keep wakeful
And stay on-guard at night.
While some like me stay guarded
So as not to miss the sight.
Cloaked by the sky, but alive and awake
And right above me is the dream country.
So the night is not so silent
Though it seems to be. ~ H

wow ! great night photo.
and sorry. only now i read the first post in this blog to see what camera u have.
hey ... i dont mean to disturb you. but i have a question.
even i have a canon and how much ever i try it is really hard to take a good night picture. with the flash it is not natural and without the flash it comes out all shaky and blurred. of course, i dont do nature photos like you do. even otherwise, with people in the snap, night photos using a digi cam are bad.
what do u do to get good night pictures ?
Hi guhan,
I am no expert, but I can tell you what little I know (rather, think I know).
1) Using and not using the flash depends upon how far your subject is. The on-camera flash only lights up about a few feet in front, so if your subject is at a good distance from you, then the flash wont help (in fact, it will most probably impair). I usually have my flash off. But with close-up people-pictures you probably want them on.
2) Try manual focus. That might help.
3) Did you try the night-time mode in your camera? It does not give the best results always, but sometimes it works well.
Finally (divulging the secret), the best way is to take multiple pictures with the different setting :) and choose the one that turns out best.
hey thanks. i did try night time mode. not very good. need really steady hands or a tripod. i think i shld try manual focus.
and with this picture, was it not totally dark yet ? if its too dark, all u get usually is the lights on the buildings in a pitch black background, rite ?
how did u get that shade of blue in the sky ? it is really cool !
Photoshop! :-)
Ok, just kidding. This pic is really sharp. Some things that have helped me get sharp pics at night is:
1) Don't hold the camera in hands. Keep it on a tripod or something and on an auto-timer.
2) Flash hurts. It brightens the nearby objects and moves the far-flung objects out of focus.
3) Avoid sources that emit too much light e.g. a nearby lamp or a very bright light in the entire picture.
4) As already pointed out, believe in the age-old time-tested method of trial and error. :-)
beautiful blog , great pics and awesome poems u rock
:) Great lines to compliment the photo.
